M1 North Stage 2 EMP2DH - Site Investigations

March
2020

The BIM one team were engaged by AECOM to undertake site investigations on the M1 Pacific Motorway and adjacent service roads – as part of TMR South Coast Region’s $750 million upgrade program.

The output of these investigations was critical to informing the design process for a major cross drainage structure installed under the motorway.

M1 North Stage 2 EMP2DH - Site Investigations

The investigation scope required careful planning and coordination of multiple specialist subcontractors to complete a series of potholes, ground penetrating radar and trace services, as well as CCTV inspections of existing stormwater assets crossing the M1, to determine structural integrity. BIM one partnered with Utility Mapping, Patriot Group, Schramm Group and Instrada, to efficiently and cost effectively deliver the scope for AECOM and ultimately TMR.

The project wasn’t without its challenges – dealing with the constantly changing COVID-19 restrictions, buried manhole covers and 4 m+ deep sewers. BIM one and Utility Mapping were able to find services that were not located on multiple previous attempts by our competitors, through our diligent planning and in-depth understanding of the existing network.

The investigations were successfully completed within three-night shifts – and we received encouraging and positive feedback from the client due to the extra attention to detail shown by the team. The most positive outcome of the engagement was that the design and construction of the major cross drainage structure can proceed with confidence by significantly reducing the risk of unexpected clashes, and any associated contractor delays or costly variations.
